AWP in New York this year. I’ll be joining Mike Steinberg, Bob Root and Lad Tobin for a panel discussion entitled “Recognizing Common Ground: Creative Writing as Composition Teachers.” My bit is about encouraging students to move beyond the usual “narrative” (sometimes referred to as the “remembered event” in textbooks) in first-year writing courses. Creative writers, particularly creative nonfiction writers can offer students the opportunity to do more with their personal essays.
Here, you can find a handout on what I’m talking about, my assignment, and a couple of warm up journal entries. Here too, I have a couple of sample student journal entries and corresponding final essays ( a few more to come). I’ll link things up here, and as soon as I figure out how to do this right, I’ll post these things along the side of the page, along with some of my other essays, which you might want to read
